Palheiro traces its origins back to the early 19th century when it was acquired by the first Count of Carvalhal. Over the years, it has transformed from a private estate into one of Madeira’s most cherished landmarks. Palheiro Gardens, also known as the Blandy’s Garden, dates back to the early 19th century. The estate was acquired by John Blandy in 1885, a British wine merchant whose family has played a significant role in the development and preservation of the gardens. The Blandy family’s dedication to horticulture transformed the estate into a botanical marvel, blending exotic plants from around the world with the indigenous flora of Madeira.

One of Palheiro’s most renowned features is its gardens, span over 30 hectares and are a botanical wonder. Camellia Avenue: This enchanting pathway is lined with over 20 species of camellias, blooming in a riot of colors and fragrances.
