Palheiro traces its origins back to the early 19th century when it was acquired by the first Count of Carvalhal. Over the years, it has transformed from a private estate into one of Madeira’s most cherished landmarks. Palheiro Gardens, also known as the Blandy’s Garden, dates back to the early 19th century. The estate was acquired by John Blandy in 1885, a British wine merchant whose family has played a significant role in the development and preservation of the gardens.
