Levada do Rei is one of the most popular and accessible levadas in Madeira, perfect for a family day out. The trail offers stunning views of the valley and the São Jorge stream. The dense forest is filled with endemic flora, providing a lush, green backdrop. One of the highlights of this hike is the small waterfalls and streams that cross the path, providing perfect spots for a quick rest and some play. Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring water and snacks. Although the trail is relatively easy, keep an eye on younger children near the water channels and slopes.
2. Um Caminho Para Todos
Translated as “A Path for Everyone,” Um Caminho Para Todos is designed with accessibility in mind, making it an ideal choice for families with young children, elderly members, or anyone with mobility challenges. Informational signs along the route provide interesting facts about the local flora and fauna, offering an educational experience for children. There are plenty of benches and shaded spots to take breaks, ensuring a comfortable hike for all. . This trail is particularly suitable for families with very young children or those who might find traditional hiking trails challenging.
3. Vereda dos Balcões
Vereda dos Balcões, is another fantastic hike for families. This short and easy trail leads to one of the most spectacular viewpoints on the island, the Balcões viewpoint, where you can take in breathtaking panoramas of Madeira’s central mountain range. The endpoint of the trail offers a panoramic view of the Ribeira da Metade valley and the towering peaks of Pico Ruivo and Pico do Areeiro. The viewpoint is an excellent spot for birdwatching. Children will love spotting different species, including the endemic Madeira firecrest. At just 1.5 kilometers each way, this hike is short enough for kids.
4. PR 22 Hike: Vereda do Chão dos Louros

The most famous hike in Madeira features several tunnels, each revealing extraordinary and sometimes even magical views. Each tunnel feels like a portal to another world, with landscapes so different on either side that it’s hard to believe they’re all part of the same trail. 🌿✨
This video was filmed at the passage through the first such tunnel along the route. Although, I would even say it’s more of an arch 🤔
