PR1.3 Vereda da Encumeada – “Dead Trees Hike”

Embark on an extraordinary adventure through the heart of Madeira’s rugged mountain landscapes with the PR1.3 Vereda da Encumeada. Recently, I had the privilege of traversing this captivating trail, covering a distance of 14 kilometers amidst towering peaks and breathtaking vistas. I named this trail “Dead Trees Hike”. Usually, everyone skips it because they choose the overcrowded PR-1 hike, but those who decide to explore beyond the usual trails are in for a treat with PR1.3 Vereda da Encumeada. It offers an unforgettable experience surrounded by the untouched beauty of nature.

1. Route description

I began my hike from the Achada do Teixeira parking lot. To make the hike more interesting, I didn’t follow the standard PR 1.2 trail leading to Pico Ruivo. Instead, I veered slightly to the left and ascended to Pico Alto Encumeada. The view of Pico do Areeiro that unfolds there is amazing. Since this peak is only 100 meters lower than Madeira’s main peak, Pico Ruivo, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the entire island. I would like to highlight this peak as an easily reachable, and, most importantly, secluded place for sunrise and sunset gatherings. It takes only 15-20 minutes to walk from the Achada do Teixeira parking lot, and I guarantee that if you wish to witness the sunrise or sunset there, absolutely no one will be around because very few people know about this peak.

After descending a bit from the cliff back to PR-1, I walked past the trail leading up to Pico Ruivo because I had been there many times before. This time, my focus was on the route 1.3. It is believed that this route officially begins at the pathway to Pico Ruivo, but I don’t understand why it’s described that way, considering you still have to walk at least nearly 3 kilometers to reach Pico Ruivo.

After turning towards Pico Ruivo, the most captivating part of the trail begins, where on both sides of the road you’ll see numerous dead trees. These trees, forming entire tunnels, emerged as a result of forest fires several years ago and have since become one of Madeira’s most recognizable natural phenomena. The road to Encumeada passes through several mountain ridges, where it’s often possible to simultaneously see both the island’s northern and southern coasts, making this route unique compared to others in Madeira. Additionally, the trail intersects with PR2 Vereda da Urzal, which offers travelers the opportunity to cross a mountain pass from Boaventura on the north coast to Curral das Freiras or the Monastery Valley. I strongly recommend taking this route, as climbing a mountain is always an engaging activity with changing landscapes. After crossing PR2, you can expect several more descents and ascents with interesting mountain formations in the form of natural stone walls. On the descent to Encumeada, there are many steps, and the descent takes quite some time. Just before descending to Encumeada, I reached a small platform, another mountain peak, from which there is a view of the Sao Vicente Valley and the Serra de Aqua or Ribeira Brava Valley. This is the only place on the island where you can see both valleys simultaneously, being in the middle of the island.

Make sure to watch my video about PR1.3 Vereda da Encumeada for a detailed view of this stunning destination!

2. How to get to Vereda da Encumeada

To reach Vereda da Encumeada, you should plan your route to the Achada do Teixeira parking lot. You can get there by rental car, taxi (though taxis on the island can be scarce), or with a private guide.

I recommend to go on this hike with somebody. I was there with my friend, we left one car at a place called Encumeada and then used it to return to Achada do Teixeira for the second car. Alternatively, you can also call for a taxi from there (again, if you’re lucky).

If you’re looking to rent a car, I always recommend using Carwave Madeira. Fully-equipped vehicles with comprehensive insurance coverage, eliminating the need for a security deposit or credit card hold. Book your rental car today.

3. Hazards and Recommendations

  1. Terrain Challenges: The route includes uneven terrain, rocky paths, and sometimes steep climbs, requiring appropriate hiking footwear and cautious movement.
  2. Weather Conditions: Be prepared for sudden weather changes, as Madeira’s mountainous regions can experience unpredictable weather phenomena. Bring sufficient clothing and rain gear.
  3. Cliff Edges: Exercise caution around cliff edges, especially in windy weather or poor visibility. Stay on marked trails and avoid getting too close to the edges.
  4. Hydration and Snacks: Carry an ample supply of water and snacks to stay hydrated and energized throughout the hike, especially during longer stretches with limited amenities.
  5. Wildlife Awareness: Respect the natural environment and wildlife along the trail. Avoid feeding or disturbing animals encountered during the hike.
  6. Emergency Preparedness: The wilderness demands respect and caution at all times. Familiarize yourself with emergency contact information and nearby facilities. Carry a fully charged phone and inform someone of your hiking plans and expected return time.
  7. Leave No Trace: Adhere to Leave No Trace principles by packing out all trash and minimizing environmental impact. Respect designated camping areas and avoid creating new trails.
  8. Guided Tours: Consider joining guided tours led by experienced local guides for enhanced safety and informative hiking experiences.
  9. Trail Closure Information: Before starting your hike, ensure the trail is not closed or there are no warnings, especially during inclement weather or maintenance periods.

The most famous hike in Madeira features several tunnels, each revealing extraordinary and sometimes even magical views. Each tunnel feels like a portal to another world, with landscapes so different on either side that it’s hard to believe they’re all part of the same trail. 🌿✨

This video was filmed at the passage through the first such tunnel along the route. Although, I would even say it’s more of an arch 🤔
