1. A Historical Overview

Palheiro traces its origins back to the early 19th century when it was acquired by the first Count of Carvalhal. Over the years, it has transformed from a private estate into one of Madeira’s most cherished landmarks. Palheiro Gardens, also known as the Blandy’s Garden, dates back to the early 19th century. The estate was acquired by John Blandy in 1885, a British wine merchant whose family has played a significant role in the development and preservation of the gardens. The Blandy family’s dedication to horticulture transformed the estate into a botanical marvel, blending exotic plants from around the world with the indigenous flora of Madeira.

2. The Gardens

One of Palheiro’s most renowned features is its gardens, span over 30 hectares and are a botanical wonder. They house an impressive collection of exotic plants and trees, many of which were brought from around the world. The gardens are divided into different sections, each offering a unique horticultural experience.

Camellia Avenue: This enchanting pathway is lined with over 20 species of camellias, blooming in a riot of colors and fragrances.

Rose Garden: A romantic corner of Palheiro, the Rose Garden boasts a variety of rose species, each meticulously cultivated to display their finest blossoms.

The Sunken Garden: A serene and secluded area, the Sunken Garden features water lilies, koi ponds, and an array of subtropical plants.

3. The Palheiro Estate

Beyond the gardens, the Palheiro Estate offers an array of attractions. The Palheiro Golf Course is a championship-level course, designed by Cabell B. Robinson. It offers breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean and the surrounding hills, making it a favorite among golf enthusiasts.

The estate also includes the Palheiro Village, a luxury accommodation option that combines the charm of traditional Madeiran architecture with modern amenities. Visitors can enjoy a stay in beautifully appointed villas, with access to all the estate’s facilities.

Palheiro Gardens is a stunning place that showcases Madeira’s natural beauty and rich horticultural history. Whether you love plants, history, or just want a peaceful place to relax, Palheiro Gardens is a must-visit.

Isn’t this the real-life Jurassic Park? 🌿 It may seem like a scene from a movie, but this place actually exists. 🦖

Nestled in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, between Europe and America, lies the enchanting island of Flores. 🌊 Part of Portugal’s Azores archipelago 🇵🇹, Flores is the westernmost point of political Europe, a sanctuary of untouched nature and unique flora. 🌸

Abandoned Hotel Monte Palace carries a bittersweet story. Once a luxurious five-star hotel with 88 rooms, restaurants, bars, conference halls, and even an exotic indoor garden, it opened in 1989 with high hopes. Despite significant investment and effort, the project ultimately failed, leading to its closure just two years later. Now, it stands as a haunting relic, slowly being reclaimed by nature.

Though its luxurious past has faded, the hotel’s location still offers some of the most stunning views in the world—overlooking Lagoa Verde and Lagoa Azul.

This eerie yet captivating spot has become a favorite for urban explorers and photographers, drawn to its unique urbex charm.

I’m confident that with the rise in tourism, it’s only a matter of time before investors see the potential in this iconic site. But for now, you can still experience its mysterious allure. Visit before it transforms into something new. ⏳

If you’re in Madeira, the Levada das 25 Fontes and Risco Waterfalls trail in the Rabaçal area is a must-see

🌿 This 10-kilometer round-trip hike takes about 3 to 5 hours and leads to the stunning 25 Fontes waterfall and Risco waterfall. 💧

You can choose between two routes:
🔦 Túnel do Cavalo: A physically easier path, but you’ll need a flashlight for safety.
⛰️ Valley Route: A more challenging, yet equally rewarding option.

The trail offers breathtaking views of lush forests and dramatic rock formations.

🌲 You’ll pass by several waterfalls, with at least two among the most beautiful on the island. The trail is atmospheric and not too difficult, making it perfect for hikers of all levels and even families. 👪

Be prepared for changing weather, especially in the mountains, by bringing waterproof gear. ☔ Wear sturdy hiking boots, carry water, and pack a rain jacket. 🥾

Whether you’re an experienced hiker or just looking for a beautiful day outdoors, this trail is an unforgettable experience. 🌄

The PR1 trail from Pico do Arieiro (1818 m) to Pico Ruivo (1862 m) is the most famous hike on Madeira Island. This path connects the 3rd highest peak with the highest peak on the island, offering countless viewpoints of the colorful valley and rocks above the clouds. You go from peak to peak, which is why it’s also commonly known as the “Pico to Pico” hike.

It is an adrenaline-filled test of endurance with steep inclines, causing some serious quad and calf burning on the trek. If you are up for the challenge, this will be the highlight of your trip to Madeira.
