1. History of Ponta do Sol

Ponta do Sol, a quaint coastal village located on the southwestern coast of Madeira Island, boasts a rich history that dates back to the early 15th century. The name “Ponta do Sol” translates to “Point of the Sun,” a fitting name for a place known for its abundant sunshine. The village was one of the first areas on the island to be settled by the Portuguese after the discovery of Madeira in 1419. It quickly became an important center for sugar cane production, which was Madeira’s primary export during the early colonial period. The historic architecture of the town, including its charming cobblestone streets and traditional whitewashed houses, offers a glimpse into its colonial past.

2. Modern Attractions

While Ponta do Sol retains its traditional charm, it also offers modern amenities and attractions. The village has become a hub for digital nomads, with several coworking spaces and high-speed internet making it an ideal location for remote work. The serene environment combined with the vibrant local culture creates a perfect balance for work and leisure. The village is known for its cultural events, such as the annual Madeira Film Festival, which draws filmmakers and cinephiles from around the world. Art lovers can explore local galleries and installations, while the village’s quaint cafes and restaurants offer a taste of authentic Madeiran cuisine. One of the standout modern attractions is the John dos Passos Cultural Centre, dedicated to the renowned American writer who had family ties to Madeira. The center hosts various cultural events and exhibitions throughout the year, making it a cultural hub for both locals and visitors.

3. Beach

Ponta do Sol boasts a small but beautiful pebble beach, perfect for sunbathing and swimming. The clear, calm waters make it an ideal spot for snorkeling, allowing visitors to explore the vibrant marine life. The beach is also a fantastic place to watch the sunset, as the sun dips below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the village.

4. Natural Beauty

The natural beauty of Ponta do Sol is stunning. Surrounded by lush green hills and dramatic cliffs, it’s a paradise for nature lovers. I spent hours hiking the local trails, especially the Levada do Moinho and Levada Nova. These paths follow old irrigation channels and offer breathtaking views of the ocean and the landscape. If you enjoy walking and nature, these trails are a must. The Levada walks are not only scenic but also provide a peaceful escape into the island’s verdant interior, allowing hikers to experience the rich biodiversity and tranquil environment that Madeira is famous for.

5. Where to stay in Ponta do Sol

When it comes to accommodations, Ponta do Sol offers a variety of options to suit different tastes and budgets. For those seeking luxury, the Estalagem da Ponta do Sol is a boutique hotel perched on a cliff overlooking the ocean. This modern hotel combines contemporary design with breathtaking views and offers amenities such as an infinity pool, spa services, and gourmet dining. One of the highlights of staying at Estalagem da Ponta do Sol is the weekly “Purple Friday” party. Held every Friday evening, this vibrant event is hosted on the hotel’s stunning terrace, offering guests the perfect way to kick off the weekend. With live music, DJ performances, and a variety of drinks and snacks, Purple Friday creates a lively and unforgettable atmosphere against the backdrop of the setting sun and the vast Atlantic Ocean. For a more intimate and traditional experience, the town has several charming guesthouses and bed-and-breakfasts. Abandoned Hotel Monte Palace carries a bittersweet story. Once a luxurious five-star hotel with 88 rooms, restaurants, bars, conference halls, and even an exotic indoor garden, it opened in 1989 with high hopes. Despite significant investment and effort, the project ultimately failed, leading to its closure just two years later. Now, it stands as a haunting relic, slowly being reclaimed by nature.

Though its luxurious past has faded, the hotel’s location still offers some of the most stunning views in the world—overlooking Lagoa Verde and Lagoa Azul.

This eerie yet captivating spot has become a favorite for urban explorers and photographers, drawn to its unique urbex charm.

I’m confident that with the rise in tourism, it’s only a matter of time before investors see the potential in this iconic site. But for now, you can still experience its mysterious allure. Visit before it transforms into something new. ⏳

The PR1 trail from Pico do Arieiro (1818 m) to Pico Ruivo (1862 m) is the most famous hike on Madeira Island. This path connects the 3rd highest peak with the highest peak on the island, offering countless viewpoints of the colorful valley and rocks above the clouds. You go from peak to peak, which is why it’s also commonly known as the “Pico to Pico” hike.

It is an adrenaline-filled test of endurance with steep inclines, causing some serious quad and calf burning on the trek. If you are up for the challenge, this will be the highlight of your trip to Madeira.
