Madeira Island, Portugal, boasts some of the most breathtaking landscapes in Europe, and the hike from Pico do Arierio to Pico Ruivo is undoubtedly one of its crown jewels. This exhilarating trail takes you through rugged terrain, along narrow pathways with jaw-dropping views at every turn. Here’s everything you need to know about embarking on this unforgettable journey.
The Pico do Arierio to Pico Ruivo hike, also known as PR1, is a challenging yet rewarding trek that spans approximately 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) one way. Starting from Pico do Arierio, the third-highest peak on Madeira Island, hikers ascend to Pico Ruivo, the highest peak, standing at an impressive 1,861 meters (6,106 feet) above sea level. Along the way, you’ll traverse narrow pathways, ascend steep inclines, and navigate rocky terrain. The trail offers breathtaking panoramic views of the island, including sweeping vistas of the surrounding mountains, deep valleys, and the sparkling Atlantic Ocean in the distance. For a smoother hiking experience, I recommend to hike the trail in one direction, starting from Pico do Arieiro towards Pico Ruivo. This allows for a gradual ascent and the option to explore additional routes, such as PR1.2. Be sure to bring plenty of water, snacks, and sturdy hiking shoes to tackle the challenging terrain.
2. How to get to Pico do Arieiro
There are several ways to reach Pico do Arieiro, the starting point for the hike:
By Taxi: Taxis are readily available on Madeira Island and can take you directly to Pico do Arieiro. This option offers convenience and door-to-door service, but it may be relatively expensive compared to other transportation methods.
By Car: If you have access to a car, you can drive to Pico do Arieiro. However, if you plan to hike one way only, you’ll need to arrange a transfer back to your car from the endpoint of the hike. Keep in mind that parking spaces at trailheads may be limited, especially during peak times. If you’re looking to rent a car, I always recommend using Carwave Madeira. Fully-equipped vehicles with comprehensive insurance coverage, eliminating the need for a security deposit or credit card hold. Book your rental car today.
Private Transfer: Another option is to book a private transfer service. This option provides the flexibility of choosing your pickup and drop-off locations, ensuring a hassle-free experience. Private transfers can be arranged in advance through various tour operators or transportation companies on the island.
3. Hazards and Recommendations
Here are some recommendations for a safe and enjoyable trek:
Hiking One Way: It’s advisable to hike one way, starting from Pico do Arieiro and finishing at Pico Ruivo. This direction is generally easier, and it allows you to experience the stunning scenery without having to backtrack. Additionally, you have the option to extend your hike by continuing onto another trail, such as PR1.2.
Avoiding Sunrise: While many suggest embarking on this hike at sunrise, I strongly disagree. In my experience, sunset views far surpass those of sunrise. it’s best to avoid setting out too early in the morning. During sunrise hours, the trails tend to be crowded, and parking spaces at trailheads can fill up quickly. Moreover, there’s a risk of not being allowed to park at Pico do Arieiro due to the high volume of vehicles.
Opting for Sunset: Instead of sunrise, consider starting your hike around midday and aim to catch the sunset at Pico Ruivo. Not only will you encounter fewer hikers on the trails, but you’ll also have the opportunity to witness the breathtaking sunset with fewer crowds. If you prefer, you can drive separately to Pico do Arieiro for the sunset, as parking availability tends to improve later in the day.
Checking Weather Conditions: Before heading out, be sure to check the weather forecast using the Madeira Weather app. Additionally, you can utilize web cameras available in the area to monitor real-time weather conditions and visibility along the trail.
The Pico do Arierio to Pico Ruivo hike is a must-do adventure for outdoor enthusiasts visiting Madeira Island. With its stunning landscapes, challenging terrain, and unparalleled views, this hike promises an unforgettable experience amidst the natural beauty of Madeira.
