The Levada do Caldeirão Verde hike (PR9) begins at the Queimadas Forestry Park in Santana, located on the northern coast of Madeira Island. From the park entrance, hikers follow a well-marked path that meanders through ancient laurel forests and across charming levadas. The trail begins with a stroll past the charming Casa de Abrigo and a duck pond. Following the wooden bridge, hikers will find signage indicating the route (PR 9 Caldeirão Verde).
The trail offers spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and valleys, with the soothing sound of flowing water accompanying your journey. As you progress along the levada, you’ll encounter a nice arched bridge, a magnificent waterfall cascading into the levada from a height of over 30 meters and several tunnels carved into the rock, adding an element of adventure to the hike.

After approximately 6.5 kilometers of hiking, you’ll reach the highlight of the trail – the Caldeirão Verde waterfall. The most famous hike in Madeira features several tunnels, each revealing extraordinary and sometimes even magical views. Each tunnel feels like a portal to another world, with landscapes so different on either side that it’s hard to believe they’re all part of the same trail. 🌿✨
This video was filmed at the passage through the first such tunnel along the route. Although, I would even say it’s more of an arch 🤔
