Levada das 25 Fontes and Risco Waterfall Hike

Madeira is a hiker’s paradise, offering an impressive range of trails and walks that traverse its diverse landscapes. One of the island’s most popular and scenic hikes is the Levada das 25 Fontes and Risco, a trail that offers a unique blend of natural beauty, flora and fauna. The Levada das 25 Fontes and Risco is an enchanting trail that meanders through the lush landscapes of Madeira, showcasing the island’s natural beauty. The trail is named after the 25 natural springs or “fontes” that pour into a lagoon along the route, and the Risco waterfall, a dramatic cascade that plummets from a towering cliff.

1. Route description.

This hike offers two distinct routes, each with its own allure and charm:
Rabacal Route: Starting from PR6 Levada das 25 Fontes / Levada do Risco, this path treats hikers to panoramic views of the valley and numerous waterfalls. Though slightly steeper, its picturesque landscapes make it ideal for those seeking a scenic adventure.
Calheta Tunnel Route: Beginning from a separate parking lot, this route offers a unique experience, guiding adventurers through an 800-meter dark tunnel. While less scenic, it provides an alternative for those preferring a less crowded path or avoiding steep inclines.
Both routes culminate at the awe-inspiring 25 Fontes lagoon. I did both of them, but here I want to tell about Calheta Tunnel Route. Walking through the tunnel is an intriguing challenge that adds an element of mystery and exploration to the experience. This route is a more peaceful and immersive.

After the tunnel, you need to walk about 2 km following the signs, and you will arrive at the 25 Fontes lagoon, surrounded by green forests and framed by cascades from 25 streams forming an impressive “wall.” This spot serves as a beautiful conclusion to the journey, providing travelers with the opportunity to rest and enjoy the tranquility.

To reach the Risco waterfall from the 25 Fontes area, you’ll need to backtrack along the levada trail for a short distance until you reach a junction. From there, follow the signs directing you to the Risco waterfall viewpoint.

On your way back, don’t forget to check out the cozy Rabaçal House café. It’s a great place to take a break and chill before heading back down the stairs to the road that leads to the tunnel.

2. How to get to the Levada das 25 Fontes hiking trail

3. Hazards and Recommendations:

While Levada das Fontes and Risco offer an unforgettable hiking experience, it’s essential to be mindful of potential hazards and adhere to safety recommendations.
Weather Conditions: Be sure to check the weather forecast before embarking on the hike. Madeira’s weather can be unpredictable, and rain can make the trails slippery and muddy.I recommend checking the weather on Madeira Weather website as it provides the most accurate weather forecasts for Madeira.

Terrain Challenges: While the trail offers a relatively mild incline, some sections may be uneven or rocky. Proper hiking shoes with good grip are essential for navigating the terrain safely.
Tunnel Passage: If you choose the Calheta Tunnel Route, be prepared to walk through an 800-meter-long tunnel. Bring a flashlight or use the light on your mobile phone to navigate through the darkness.
Footwear: Given the possibility of encountering wet terrain, waterproof footwear is highly recommended to keep your feet dry and comfortable throughout the hike.
Timing: It’s advisable to embark on the hike during the afternoon, as the morning tends to attract more tourists. This timing ensures a more tranquil experience and reduces crowding along the trail, offering greater comfort.
